The Netherlands, as a country with a rich culture and a long history in the music scene, has recently announced that it will not participate in Eurovision 2027. This decision was made by the Dutch public broadcaster, NPO, due to social sensitivities arising from Israel's presence at this event.

Reasons for the Netherlands' Withdrawal

Jor Bosman, media director of NPO, stated in a statement: "We have known for some time that Israel's presence in this contest brings varied reactions in society and leads to debate and division of opinion." For this reason, NPO decided to withdraw from this event after consulting with the Council of Broadcasters.

This withdrawal marks the end of a series of decision-making changes in the Netherlands that reflect the nature of divisions in this country as well as globally. Last August, the broadcaster AVROTROS had withdrawn from participating in this contest due to its inability to hold a "neutral" event under the current circumstances, but a month later, NPO announced that it would take responsibility.

Consequences of This Decision

NPO's executive director, Jet de Ranitz, acknowledged that this decision might disappoint many Eurovision fans in the Netherlands, but emphasized that the contest will still be broadcast through public channels. He added: "We must conclude that it is still too early to participate in Eurovision 2027. Due to existing sensitivities, we decided to temporarily withdraw."

Last August, organizers announced that no country involved in an armed conflict would have the right to host this contest. However, these decisions have not prevented further withdrawals. Countries like Ireland and Spain have also joined the list of withdrawing countries.

The Eurovision contest, considered the largest live music television event in the world, will take place on May 15, 2027, in the Black Sea city of Bulgaria. This is the first time the Balkan country will host this contest. The winner of last year's contest, Darina Yotova, achieved this title with the song "Bangarang" in Vienna, the capital of Austria.

Since the launch of this contest in 1955, Eurovision has become an important music platform and has brought global fame to artists like ABBA and Celine Dion. The 2026 contest was also held with 131 million viewers, showing a decrease of 35 million compared to the previous year, after five countries withdrew due to Israel's participation.

The Netherlands, which participated in the first Eurovision in 1956, has won this contest five times so far. The last victory for this country was in 2019 with the song "Arcade" led by Duncan Laurence, which achieved global success.

The director of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes this event, also expressed regret that the Netherlands will not participate in this contest and said: "We understand their decision and respect the sentiments in the Netherlands. At the same time, we believe that Eurovision is important in today's divided world."

Bosman from NPO also stated that the broadcaster is still in talks with EBU about the future of this contest and said: "We are convinced that this event can again become a place for music and connection, where there is space for discussion about social issues."
