The Oman national cricket team has departed to participate in the 20th edition of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with a team of entirely Omani players. This historic presence is considered an important step in the development of cricket in Oman.
Making history in the Asian Games
After achieving success in the preliminary round in Singapore, Oman is now joining the ranks of cricketing nations in Asia with a 15-member team consisting entirely of Omani players. This is the first time Oman is participating in the Asian Games, and Oman is also the only Gulf Cooperation Council country to compete in the men's T20I cricket tournaments.

Dweep Mendes, the development manager of Omani cricket, stated: "We have dreamed for years of forming an entirely Omani team for the Asian Games, and now we have achieved this dream. Our boys performed well in Singapore and made history, and we are proud of them. We wish them success in Japan and hope they perform their best."
Preparation and challenges ahead
Sufyan Mahmood, the team captain, welcomed the opportunity to represent Oman on such a grand stage and said: "This is Oman’s first appearance in the Asian Games and a great opportunity to showcase our talents. We have trained well, and now it’s time to perform well and advance to the second round."
The development of this team began in March 2025 with the inclusion of the team in the preliminary round of the Asian Games. Players gained valuable international experience in a series of bilateral matches with Bahrain in April 2025. The biggest success in the preliminary round of the Asian Games was achieved in Singapore in May 2026, where Oman qualified for the Aichi-Nagoya competitions by defeating Singapore and Bahrain.
The Oman national cricket team continues its preparations with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, providing facilities and resources equal to those of the men's national team. This team has independently met all its needs without corporate support and independent of the organizing council.
The Oman team will compete with 10 other teams in this tournament and is grouped in Group B with Hong Kong and Malaysia. Competing at this stage will be a significant challenge, but for the young cricketers of Oman, this journey to Japan is the realization of a long-held dream to represent the Sultanate on a continental level.
