Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has signed the largest drilling contract in its history with Weatherford. This contract, signed on September 21, 2026, includes drilling 274 wells in the Marmul and Saqra areas and will last for three years.
Increasing Capacity and Improving Efficiency
This contract has been signed at a time when the oil and gas sector in Oman is seeking to strengthen global cooperation to enhance drilling efficiency and improve production. Typically, Oman signs drilling contracts for a maximum of 10 wells, so this move reflects a willingness to expand exploratory programs in the country.
The goal of the largest drilling contract in Oman is to create wells for oil production as well as wells for water injection. This program is designed to improve efficiency and optimize drilling resources and equipment, distributing them more effectively in targeted areas.
Reducing Costs and Strengthening Local Value
The new contract model anticipates a 20% reduction in costs compared to traditional pricing models. This allows Petroleum Development Oman to have greater oversight over costs and clearly define responsibilities and outcomes. This initiative will help enhance the efficiency of oil operations in Oman.
Dr. Aflah bin Said Al-Hadhrami, CEO of Petroleum Development Oman, stated that this contract represents another step towards achieving the company's goals for effective and responsible production from the country's hydrocarbon resources. He also emphasized the development of local capacities and investment in Omani capabilities.
On the other hand, Jirsh Saligram, CEO of Weatherford, emphasized the company's commitment to operational excellence and innovation, adding that this contract will help develop local capabilities and expand opportunities for domestic companies.
The new drilling contract comes at a time when Petroleum Development Oman continues to develop oil fields and improve production efficiency, marking an important step in supporting the country's oil resources and optimizing local infrastructure and capacities in future projects.
