Qatar-based Power International Holding (PIH) is working on the development of two gas processing plants in the Kashagan field of Kazakhstan and a major gas pipeline project. This initiative is part of the company's extensive investment in the energy and telecommunications sectors of Kazakhstan.
Meeting with Kazakh Officials
Oljas Bektanov, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, met on Thursday with Moutaz Al Khayyat, Chairman of the Board of PIH, and Ramez Al Khayyat, President and CEO of the group, to review the progress of the company's projects in the country. PIH is developing two gas processing plants in the Kashagan field, with an annual capacity of 1 billion to 2.5 billion cubic meters. Installation work at the first plant is underway, and the delivery of its main equipment will soon be completed. Operations at this plant are expected to commence in 2027.
Gas Pipeline Project
The Qatari company is also involved in the second section of the Bino-Bozoy-Shymkent gas pipeline, which has been described by the project operator as the largest natural gas pipeline project in the history of independent Kazakhstan. The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan emphasized the need for closer coordination to maintain project timelines and promised government support to overcome any obstacles. Representatives of PIH also reiterated the company's commitment to completing the agreed projects and expressed their willingness for further collaboration, especially in telecommunications.
The latest discussions between PIH and the Kazakh government have been based on the company's investment in the telecommunications sector of the country. In 2024, the state-owned Kazakhtelecom agreed to sell the company Mobile Telecom-Service, which operates the Tele2 and Altel brands, to PIH for $1.1 billion. The government of Kazakhstan announced that this Qatari company is also committed to expanding the network of this company.
In 2026, PIH was ranked seventh among the top 100 Arab family businesses in Forbes Middle East and secured the highest rank among Qatari groups. This private consortium operates in 25 countries and covers various sectors, including energy, construction, healthcare, agriculture, telecommunications, real estate, and hospitality.
Through its extensive portfolio of companies, PIH has also participated in major government projects in other regions. These projects include the $4 billion renovation of Damascus International Airport and a $3.5 billion investment in the dairy industry, which has been jointly developed with the government of Algeria.
