The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued a warning to the public regarding the dangers of electronic blackmail, urging victims to report incidents to specialized authorities quickly and not to respond to threats. Electronic blackmail involves the use of technology and social media to threaten or intimidate individuals by obtaining private information, photos, or videos and threatening to publish or misuse them.

Common Methods of Electronic Blackmail

According to the Royal Oman Police, criminals may use fake accounts, hacked accounts, or leaked old data to obtain personal information about individuals and exploit this information to take advantage of victims. Requests made by these criminals may include money, additional photos or videos, committing illegal acts, or gaining control and exploiting victims.

Warning Signs and Necessary Actions

The Royal Oman Police has provided several warning signs that may indicate an individual is facing electronic blackmail. These signs include noticeable changes in behavior, unusual financial problems, and psychological pressure. The police have advised the public not to respond to these threats and to refrain from negotiating with blackmailers, as this may encourage further demands.

Victims are also urged to preserve all evidence, including messages, photos, account details, and other relevant information, and to avoid deleting conversations or other digital records that could assist investigations. The Royal Oman Police has requested anyone facing electronic blackmail to contact specialized authorities through designated reporting channels.

For assistance and to report electronic crimes, the public can contact the Royal Oman Police at 80077444.
