The 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which is considered the first Olympic event held on the African continent, began on Saturday in the capital of Senegal, Dakar. This historic event, with approximately 2,665 athletes aged 14 to 17 from various countries around the world, is seen as a milestone for the African continent.
A Festival for Africa
The streets of Dakar are adorned with banners written in the local language, featuring messages such as "Africa welcomes you, Dakar celebrates." These games also mark the return of Russian athletes to the Olympics and the participation of a refugee team. Competitions will be held in 25 sports and 153 medal events.

Message from the President of the International Olympic Committee
Kristin Coverti, President of the International Olympic Committee, emphasized at a press conference held on Thursday in Dakar: "We have people from all over the world who may have a different perception of Africa, and we hope they leave here with a positive experience. This is very important for our continent." She added: "The games refer not only to sports but also to the culture and identity of Africa."
The games will take place in eight different venues across three areas including Dakar, the suburbs of Diamniadio, and the coastal city of Saly. The opening ceremony will be held on Saturday night in Diamniadio. Senegal will participate in this event with 136 athletes, and about 6,000 Senegalese volunteers will also be present to assist in organizing the games.
Local Challenges and Hope for the Future
Although there is much excitement in Dakar for the start of these games, the fourth Summer Youth Olympics has faced challenges. Many residents of Senegal are more focused on issues such as high living costs, unemployment, and economic hardships. Prime Minister Ahmedou El Aminou Lo stated in an interview: "With the start of the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, Dakar will become the capital of youth in Africa. Hosting these games in Africa is a symbol."

Participation of Russian Athletes and the Refugee Team
The International Olympic Committee effectively lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee in July. The 2026 Youth Olympic Games are the first Olympic competition in which Russian athletes can participate under their own flag and colors. According to the Russian Olympic Committee, 13 Russian athletes along with 10 coaches will be present at this event. Anzor Gaunov, coach of judoka Anastasia Debrolskaya, said: "The children are excited, and it is good news that our rightful claim to participate with the national anthem and flag of Russia has been restored."
The Olympic refugee team mainly consists of athletes based in Africa. The Dakar games provide an opportunity to showcase the culture and identity of the African continent and also strengthen international cooperation in the field of sports.
