Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, unveiled a domestic investment program worth $60 billion at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York. This program includes the launch of a new financial platform aimed at accelerating the growth of the private sector in the country.
Qatar's Economic Development Trends
This major financial allocation was announced at the Qatar Economic Forum (QEF): a special session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In this speech, the Prime Minister of Qatar outlined the next phase of the country's economic development and referred to how the country has successfully managed regional supply chain disruptions.
Qatar expects to approve about $38.5 billion in new infrastructure projects over the next five years. Bids for these projects, which will heavily involve public-private partnerships, will begin soon. It is also anticipated that an investment line in real estate and hospitality will attract $22.5 billion in private investment, with the development of the Simsimah beaches valued at $5.8 billion leading the way.
Launch of Doha Investment Platform
To manage this economic expansion, Sheikh Mohammed officially launched the Doha Investment Platform. This platform was established to oversee the domestic portfolio of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and aims to expand the role of the private sector in economic growth, deepen local capital markets, and ensure the competitiveness of Qatari businesses globally.
The Prime Minister of Qatar referred to recent geopolitical instabilities in the Middle East, describing the situation as a "quake" that has challenged global security. He emphasized the importance of strategic preparedness over the years to address these challenges and noted Qatar's immediate action in introducing new transport routes to meet local market needs.
Sheikh Mohammed also stressed that the country's financial infrastructure managed these shocks seamlessly, and financial and banking systems continued to operate.
In conclusion, he pointed to the opportunities arising from current challenges and emphasized the need to build stronger resilience. The development of the North Field was introduced as one of the key drivers to strengthen Qatar's role as a reliable energy supplier globally and to support further economic diversification.
