The official visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to the Republic of Botswana, aimed at strengthening economic relations and investment between Oman and Botswana, reflects the bright prospects of cooperation between the two countries. This visit, which took place on Wednesday, demonstrates Oman's firm determination to expand the horizons of economic cooperation and diversify its economy.
A Turning Point in Oman and Botswana Relations
This visit is regarded as a turning point in the relations between Oman and Botswana, providing an opportunity to exchange views on common issues and explore ways to develop cooperation in the fields of economy and investment. These interactions could strengthen the connections between the business communities of the two countries and create new horizons for the private sector.
Oman and Botswana have continuously been striving to strengthen these cooperations, and the two visits of President Duma Gideon Boko to Oman, the first of which took place from October 18 to 20, 2025, and the second from April 12 to 15, 2026, have played a significant role in enhancing the relations between the two countries. During these visits, several agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed in the fields of mining, energy, petroleum product storage, solar energy, and medical cooperation.
Investment Opportunities and Sustainable Development
In November 2025, the two countries signed strategic agreements in Gaborone aimed at implementing renewable energy projects with a total capacity of up to 3000 megawatts and cooperation in mineral exploration covering about 70% of Botswana's unexplored lands. These agreements also include the development of petroleum product storage facilities and strengthening energy security and regional trade.
Faisal Abdullah Al-Rawas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that the two countries possess the necessary economic infrastructure to expand their partnership. He emphasized that this partnership is based on sustainable development and a greater role for the private sector. He also pointed out investment opportunities in the fields of mining, agriculture, food security, tourism, and logistics.
Overall, the relations between Oman and Botswana exemplify mutual trust that has entered a new phase through agreements and investment projects. Under the leadership of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Oman continues to utilize economic diplomacy to strengthen trade and diversify its economy.
