The middle ear implant surgery, as the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman, was successfully performed by the otology and ear surgery team at the City of Muscat Medical University. This two-hour procedure helped improve the hearing of a female patient with advanced sensorineural hearing loss.

Surgery Details

This patient had been experiencing a gradual decline in hearing ability in recent years, and medical examinations indicated moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss. Despite using conventional hearing aids, she was unable to achieve satisfactory results, which led to the need for a comprehensive medical and audiological evaluation to determine suitable treatment options.

After a thorough review of her case, this patient was identified as a suitable candidate for the middle ear implant. This advanced option is presented as a hearing rehabilitation solution for patients who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids. The surgery was successfully performed a few weeks ago, and after activating the external processor, the patient was able to regain hearing at exceptional levels.

Challenges and Benefits of Middle Ear Implants

The surgery was conducted by the otology and ear surgery team led by Dr. Khalid Said Al-Zahrabi, senior otology consultant at Sultan Qaboos Hospital. Al-Zahrabi stated that the importance of performing such surgeries lies in providing an excellent and more effective alternative to conventional hearing aids. This procedure allows for immediate and long-term benefits while reducing issues caused by wax buildup in the ear canal.

He added that the main challenge in performing this type of surgery relates to the small size and precision of the implanted components and devices. Installing the hearing implant on the bones of the middle ear requires high skill and precision, and care must be taken to maintain the integrity of the ossicular chain without affecting its natural movement.

This success is seen as a continuation of the City of Muscat Medical University’s efforts in developing hearing implant programs. This center had previously launched Bonebridge and cochlear implant programs and has now achieved middle ear implant surgery. This reflects the center's ongoing commitment to adopting the latest medical technologies and providing advanced treatment options for patients.

This achievement has strengthened the capabilities of the City of Muscat Medical University in managing various types of hearing loss and related surgical interventions, contributing to enhancing the efficiency of healthcare services provided and expanding specialized care for the community.
