Syria reopened its main border with Jordan on Wednesday, while the two countries confirmed their relations following tensions arising from a retaliatory attack by Jordanian forces. This reopening came after a serious crisis between the two countries, which arose following an attack on a church in Jordan.
History of Tensions
The attack by Jordanian forces, which was a retaliation for gunfire directed at a church in the Karak province of Jordan, resulted in the deaths of more than 20 jihadist fighters. Syria described these attacks as an "unacceptable violation," while Jordan confirmed that several fighters from terrorist groups were killed in the operation.
Last week, an attack occurred during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in the Karak province, resulting in the deaths of 9 people and injuries to 25 others. This incident prompted a military response from Amman and heightened tensions in the region. In this context, Syria was seeking to resolve the issue through diplomatic and legal channels.
Border Reopening and Consequences
The Naseeb border, known as Jaber on the Jordanian side, had been closed following these attacks, but according to Mazen Alalouch, a senior customs official in Syria, the movement of passengers and goods will return to normal starting Wednesday. Despite recent tensions, Jordan has expressed hope to improve its relations with its northern neighbor and has stated that it holds "great respect" for Syria.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry, in response to the recent attacks, labeled them as "unacceptable violations" and "aggression against Syrian airspace" and called for the rights of the victims. Meanwhile, Jordan announced that it had arrested three suspects related to the church attack, two of whom were brothers and one was a relative of theirs.
These tensions occur while Syria is still grappling with the consequences of its civil war, and terrorist groups such as ISIS remain active in some areas of the country. Reports indicate that this group is currently operating in border areas with Jordan.
Despite recent tensions, Syria and Jordan once again emphasized the importance of diplomatic relations and security cooperation. This border reopening could be a sign of efforts to improve relations and stability in the region.
