The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on November 4, 2023, that it has sent four trucks filled with essential medical supplies to the city of Taiz in Yemen. This delivery came after several weeks of intense fighting that had cut off access to the city. The city of Taiz has been largely besieged in recent months, and battles have prevented humanitarian aid from reaching the area.

Humanitarian Situation in Taiz

Taiz, with a population of over 300,000 people displaced by recent conflicts in Yemen, is facing severe shortages of water, food, and fuel. Main supply routes, including the Taiz-Adan corridor, have been largely blocked by Houthi forces. Hospitals in the city are under severe pressure and are facing a critical shortage of medical supplies. The International Committee of the Red Cross has stated that sending surgical kits to hospitals for treating war casualties is a vital step in supporting these health facilities.

Call to Facilitate Humanitarian Aid Deliveries

Christian Sipula, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Yemen, stated: "For patients with severe injuries or critical medical conditions, access to timely medical care can be a matter of life and death. This is important regardless of where they live or which side of the front line they are on." He also urged the parties involved in this crisis to continue facilitating safe and sustainable access for humanitarian aid.

According to reports from humanitarian organizations, hospitals across Yemen are under severe pressure and facing a sharp increase in casualties from the war. Intense fighting on several fronts has also cut off access to vital aid for approximately 800,000 people. This critical situation continues as the people of Yemen face increasing humanitarian challenges, and the need for international support is felt more than ever.
