Russian airstrikes on a school that was functioning as a humanitarian aid distribution center in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine left 26 dead and 5 injured. These attacks, which took place on Monday, occurred in the village of Komyshuvakha, located 35 kilometers east of the city of Zaporizhzhia and near the front line.
Details of the Attacks and Reactions
Russian aircraft dropped more than 10 guided bombs in these attacks. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, described the attacks as "absolutely horrific" and accused Russia of being aware of the humanitarian purpose of the location. Zelensky wrote on social media: "After the first airstrike, a second attack occurred with nine more bombs specifically targeting a shelter where people had taken refuge."
The President of Ukraine added: "Russia could not have been unaware that every week, local residents who remained in Komyshuvakha were receiving humanitarian aid at the same location." Ukrainian emergency services announced that two members of the rescue team also lost their lives in these attacks.
Consequences of the Attacks and Signs of Tension
These attacks occurred less than 24 hours after the end of a six-day local humanitarian ceasefire around the city of Oleshky in the neighboring Kherson region. Zelensky emphasized that this temporary ceasefire could have led to actions aimed at reaching an agreement to end Russia's assault. He added: "This once again shows that Russia has no desire to de-escalate or pursue real justice... With these massacres, Russia has sent a completely opposite signal; they are counting on more killings."
The Zaporizhzhia region has repeatedly been targeted by heavy Russian airstrikes for several months. These attacks exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the area and raise international concerns.
Diplomatic Meetings in Abu Dhabi
Meanwhile, a trilateral meeting between officials from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine is scheduled to take place next week in Abu Dhabi. Steven Vitkoff, a representative of the U.S. President, announced that the goal of this meeting is "to advance President Trump's mission to end the war." The discussions are expected to focus on post-war security arrangements, de-escalation efforts, humanitarian initiatives, and next steps toward peace.
Forces consisting of about 2,800 soldiers from 10 European countries are also preparing to conduct the first multinational force exercise to support Ukraine. This force will only be deployed if a ceasefire is achieved that ends the war between Kyiv and Moscow.
