The Pakistan Army, in its latest statements, is optimistic about negotiations between Iran and the United States. Concerns have increased following the recent trips of Pakistan Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to Tehran and meetings with Iranian and other officials.

Frequent trips by the Army Chief and positive signs

Pakistan Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has visited Tehran twice this month. His latest trip was alongside Saudi and Turkish officials. Army spokesman, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, stated regarding these visits: "Why would the Field Marshal travel to Tehran twice if there were no signs of progress? Therefore, yes, we are optimistic." He also emphasized that the Pakistan Army is still cautiously observing these negotiations.

Existing challenges and regional interactions

Chaudhry further pointed out existing challenges, stating that there are still "powerful tricksters and opponents" who benefit from war. Without naming these individuals, he emphasized the importance of resolving crises through dialogue and regional cooperation. According to him, regional countries must ensure their own security, and there is no need for foreign intervention in this regard.

Following recent negotiations, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, announced that regional security must be ensured by the countries of the region without foreign intervention. These statements reflect Iran's willingness to strengthen regional cooperation, which could influence the negotiation process.

In response to questions about sending more Pakistani forces to Saudi Arabia, Chaudhry stated that this matter depends on the situation and decisions of the political leadership of both countries. He also emphasized that Pakistan is committed to defending Saudi Arabia and the holy sites of Mecca and Medina, adding: "We are not part of the Yemen conflict, which is an internal conflict of Yemen."

As conflicts between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group in Yemen have reignited due to tensions with Iran, Pakistani officials are seeking diplomatic solutions to reduce tensions and prevent the spread of war in the region.

Domestic developments and security challenges

Domestically, the federal government of Pakistan has suspended the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government due to its failure to combat terrorism and has also arrested the governor of the province, Sohail Afridi. This action was taken following allegations of inability to manage security. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party led by Imran Khan has denied these allegations, stating that their government has been involved in anti-terrorism efforts.

Lieutenant General Chaudhry, in response to whether more military operations will be conducted in this province, said: "Our anti-terror operations are designed based on what we call intelligence-based operations. There is a desire to increase the activities of these operations."

In the February 2024 elections, independent candidates supported by the PTI secured the most electoral seats but failed to achieve a majority. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the only province under Khan's control. Khan has been in prison since 2023, and his supporters are protesting against the military's involvement in his imprisonment and the dissolution of the PTI party. The Pakistan Army has denied any involvement in politics.
