Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, on Tuesday honored Captain Smith Machhar and the crew of Fly Dubai (Flight FZ1073) by awarding them the First Class Zayed II Medal for their bravery and efforts in ensuring the safety of passengers during a serious terrorist incident while in flight.

Recognition of the Crew's Bravery

This medal was presented to them by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The ceremony, attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, also paid tribute to the flight crew.

Flight FZ1073, which was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv, diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on September 30 due to a serious incident in the cockpit. Captain Machhar was injured in this incident, while other crew members, non-operational pilots, and passengers assisted in controlling the situation. The aircraft landed safely, and all 172 passengers and crew were reported to be in complete safety.

Recognition of the Crew's Responsibility

During this meeting, officials highlighted the role and bravery of the flight crew and praised the high level of responsibility they demonstrated in ensuring the safety and security of passengers. They emphasized that the safety of individuals is the highest priority and value of the United Arab Emirates.

While Machhar was receiving treatment for his injuries, Sheikh Hamdan visited him and praised his courage and sense of responsibility in protecting human lives. He stated that he is proud of Captain Machhar for being part of "our nation's story."

In an interview, Machhar referred to the incident and said that he suffered many injuries at the time of the attack and struggled to defend himself. He recalled a moment when he had to shout for help to his colleagues while the plane was descending and eventually succeeded in opening the cockpit door to allow others in.

Finally, the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, also announced that he would award Captain Machhar the Israeli Civil Honor Medal.
