Chris Wright, U.S. Energy Secretary, emphasized the government's focus on expanding domestic oil production, natural gas, refining capacity, and electrical grid infrastructure to sustain economic growth and address geopolitical disruptions.

The Necessity of Increasing Energy Production Capacity

Wright stated in his remarks: "The only way to improve the United States is to increase energy production. Do we want to bring production back to the United States? Do we want to outpace China in artificial intelligence and benefit from drug discovery and reduced healthcare costs? Absolutely. But this requires tens and perhaps hundreds of gigawatts of new electricity production capacity. This government is fully committed to this goal."

He also pointed to the main pressures on consumer fuel costs, stating that this pressure is more due to global refining capacity constraints than access to crude oil. Wright referenced the reduction in Russian refining output due to the Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East, adding: "The current major problem with gasoline and diesel prices is the refineries, as Russian refineries have been severely damaged and have lost about 40 percent of their capacity. We have lost some capacity in the Middle East that is not delivering products to the market."

Government Actions to Build New Refineries

Wright added that federal officials are working to lift regulatory restrictions and support the construction of the first new domestic refinery in decades. He said: "It is this lost refining capacity that puts pressure on prices, and we are working to build the first new refinery in the United States in decades."

The Energy Secretary also referred to broader electrical needs and mentioned the "SPARK" initiative, which includes two billion dollars from the Department of Energy and over three billion dollars in private investment to expand the national transmission network. This initiative aims to reduce electricity costs for households for over 100 million Americans by improving the efficiency of existing production assets.

Wright emphasized that increasing production and maintaining technological superiority in artificial intelligence requires tens or hundreds of gigawatts of new production capacity. He added: "Natural gas is our largest source for electricity generation. We have created a pause on closing coal plants and are restarting nuclear plants, with new nuclear plants soon to be under construction."

He also noted the changing public attitude towards nuclear energy, stating that two-thirds of people now support nuclear energy, especially among those under 40. Wright pointed out that responses to early commercial plants remain one of the safest energy sources in the world, adding that new generation plants also provide higher safety standards.

He concluded by noting that after 20 months in office, the government has halted the closure of over 30 gigawatts of coal energy and expanded production so that the United States now produces more natural gas than Russia and Saudi Arabia, as well as more than Iran, Russia, and China combined.
