Vladimir Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, recently emphasized in an interview that any planning for dialogue about a new security framework in Europe, without addressing how to end the war with Russia, could be "dangerous." He specifically expressed concern about the implications of such discussions for the European Union.
Zelensky's Warning on Security Negotiations
Zelensky, referring to the trilateral negotiations taking place between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, said: "When Russia shows no willingness to discuss ending this war and wants to start with a new security infrastructure in Europe, this can be dangerous." He pointed out that such actions may overshadow efforts to resolve disputes.

Zelensky also responded to the question of whether he trusts the statements of Jared Kushner, the U.S. President's envoy, regarding the respect for the territorial integrity of countries, stating that Ukraine has received multiple proposals and is engaged in various discussions, some of which he described as useful and important. He emphasized that Ukraine supports a ceasefire and de-escalation, but there are no signs from Russia indicating readiness to take actions towards ending the war.
Security Implications for Europe
Zelensky also noted that Ukraine is neither a member of the European Union nor NATO, while seeking EU membership. He stressed that any agreement affecting European security will have consequences for all countries in the region. He said: "We are not part of the European Union and are currently on the path to joining it. These issues are dangerous for all of us. We all live in Europe."
Zelensky strongly rejected any division of Europe based on past geopolitical agreements and emphasized that Ukraine does not want to witness a repeat of the Yalta Agreement. He said: "We do not want to experience a second Yalta. We are not prepared for such a problem and do not want to be divided by Russia."
He also underscored the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity as fundamental principles essential for any independent country, stating: "Sovereignty and territorial integrity are key questions for any independent country that wants to remain free and democratic. Neighbors must respect your sovereignty and territorial integrity."
Currently, Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are preparing for trilateral negotiations at working levels, which will take place in less than a week. Zelensky mentioned that detailed discussions have been held regarding preparations for this new diplomatic phase.
Zelensky also referred to the scale of recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, announcing that Russian forces have launched 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles, and 59 cruise missiles towards Ukraine. These attacks have primarily targeted energy infrastructure, leading to power outages in several regions.
Following these developments, U.S. Special Representative Steven Vitkoff announced that Washington will mediate between Ukraine and Russia on November 10 and 11 in Abu Dhabi, focusing on post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, and humanitarian efforts.
