Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, called for immediate assistance to rebuild and maintain the energy infrastructure of his country, which has been damaged due to the war, during the Ibero-American summit held in Madrid. He proposed that the attending countries send electrical equipment including transformers, cables, and generators to Ukraine.

Damage from Attacks

Zelensky told the leaders of the attending countries in his speech that Russia has damaged all of Ukraine's power plants through missile and drone attacks, creating a need for ongoing repairs to prevent a nationwide blackout. He emphasized that Ukraine needs transformers from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia, cables from Chile, and electrical equipment and generators from Spain. Zelensky urged governments to help establish communication between Kyiv and equipment suppliers promptly.

Pressure on Russia and the Need for Defensive Cooperation

Zelensky also called on countries not to remain silent against Russia's war crimes and referred to the recent attack on a school where civilians had gathered to receive humanitarian aid. He pointed to the abduction of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia and requested that international pressure on Moscow be increased.

This president also referred to the developments of the war and modern security needs, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among different countries in the field of defense technologies. Zelensky particularly highlighted the importance of drones, electronic warfare systems, and air defense, urging the attending countries to cooperate with Ukraine in this regard.

Zelensky unexpectedly traveled to Spain to discuss strengthening Kyiv's air defense and holding high-level meetings on the sidelines of the Ibero-American summit. Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, deemed support for Ukraine essential and emphasized that in this war, there is an aggressor and a victim; Russia, which has violated international laws, and Ukraine, which is defending its freedom and sovereignty. He also stated that supporting Kyiv is in Europe's interest as well.
