The air forces of the internationally recognized Yemeni government conducted a wide-ranging military operation, carrying out 20 strikes on Houthi positions in Taiz province. These attacks occurred within the last three hours and included targeting Houthi movements, personnel, vehicles, and military equipment.
Escalating Tensions in Yemen
These attacks take place as tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis have significantly increased. This escalation comes despite a ceasefire between the two sides, which was signed under the supervision of the United Nations in 2022, that had largely halted cross-border attacks.

The unchallenged occupation of Taiz province, located in southwestern Yemen, allows the Houthis to gain complete control over the north of the country and facilitates access to the Red Sea coasts as well as to the southern city of Aden, which is considered the seat of the Yemeni government.
Humanitarian and Strategic Consequences
These renewed clashes have so far displaced tens of thousands of local residents and could significantly alter control over Yemen. These changes may have profound impacts on shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Saudi Arabia has also announced that the Houthis attacked a power distribution station in Medina, which supplies electricity to the Prophet's Mosque. A Houthi military source, linked to the Saba news agency, denied this claim and described it as a cover for Saudi Arabia's failure to substantiate its previous claim of Houthi targeting of the holy city of Mecca.
Two weeks ago, Saudi Arabia announced that it intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone in southern Mecca before it entered the restricted airspace over the city. The Houthis also denied this claim and refuted targeting Mecca or any other sacred Islamic site.
As clashes continue to intensify across Taiz province, local authorities have ordered the closure of all roads leading to the province, designating these areas as military operational zones. Approximately 19 roads are affected by these closures, including the main route from southern Sanaa to Taiz.
