The 130% increase in global container shipping prices since February 2026 has raised concerns about transportation costs. This increase has taken place while India's container-based trade continues to grow.

Analysis of Price Trends and Their Impacts

Recent reports indicate that global shipping prices have risen again after a continuous decline since early 2025. In 2024, high rates gradually improved and approached a balance between demand and supply. However, now, with the rise of new tensions in the Middle East, prices have once again come into focus.

According to this report, shipping prices have risen from around $2000 to $2500 in February 2026 to nearly $4000 to $4500 in October 2026. This increase follows a period where prices remained relatively low in early 2026.

Impact on India's Trade

This price increase coincides with strong growth in India’s export-import trade in September 2026. The value of this trade has increased by 23% compared to the previous year, thanks to a 22% rise in exports and a 23% increase in imports. Exports to the United States in September have risen by 48% compared to last year. However, exports to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have decreased by 12% to 15%, respectively.

This data indicates that while shipping prices have increased, India’s trade growth continues. Additionally, port traffic data shows varying trends across the country. The volume of goods in major ports in September 2026 has increased by 13% compared to last year, while the volume of goods in minor ports has decreased by 1%.

Among minor ports, the volume of goods in Gujarat ports has increased by 3%, while ports in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have experienced growth of 6% to 7%. However, both major and minor ports on the eastern coast of India have seen a significant decline this month.

The report highlights the importance of returning shipping lines to the Suez Canal amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and emphasizes that changes in shipping routes can impact global shipping prices.

Ultimately, with the expansion of international trade flows, this report suggests that higher shipping prices do not seem to significantly affect the growth of India’s export-import trade. This is while developments in this region are of great importance to businesses reliant on international freight movement.
