The political and diplomatic relations between the Sultanate of Oman and Britain are among the oldest and most robust bilateral relations in the region, with roots extending back over two centuries. This relationship, described as "deep, historical, and strong," was established based on the "Treaty of 1800" and laid the foundation for a strategic partnership between the two countries.

Cooperation Agreements and Regional Security

The two countries also signed a "Comprehensive Agreement on Sustainable Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation" in 2019, recognized as a strong indication of mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral relations that have roots in centuries past. These relations extend beyond the bilateral dimension, including coordination on security and regional stability issues. All these indicators demonstrate that the relations between Oman and Britain are not merely a historical legacy but an effective and ongoing political and diplomatic partnership that is renewed through high-level visits, institutional mechanisms, and continuous coordination on regional and international challenges.

Royal Visit and Its Impacts

The royal visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to Britain represents the level of strong historical relations between these two friendly countries in various fields, especially diplomatic and political. Some researchers and experts in political affairs and international relations emphasized that the dimensions of this visit will have positive impacts on the future of bilateral relations between the two parties.

Awad bin Said Baqweir, a member of the State Council of Oman, stated that Oman and Britain enjoy a strong historical relationship that spans over two centuries. He noted that the two countries have continued their friendly relations through the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation of 1798 during the reign of Sultan bin Ahmad Al-Busaidi. Baqweir also pointed to the strategic maritime position of both countries, which has played a central role in trade communications.

He also emphasized that the foreign policy of both friendly countries has always experienced coordination and political consultation, whether on regional geopolitical issues, the positive role of the Sultanate of Oman in ensuring maritime navigation security, or diplomatic communications regarding regional and international issues.

The Oman-Britain Friendship Organization has played a prominent role in continuing cooperation, and ongoing visits between officials of the two countries in support of defense, economic, and educational fields, as well as technology transfer, have transformed the relations between the two countries into an exemplary model.

In conclusion, Baqweir stated: "The path of historical relations between the two countries has contributed to creating stability and peace in the region, and undoubtedly, the international order has witnessed significant changes. Therefore, the two friendly countries contribute to the issue of reducing tensions and finding political solutions to all conflicts, especially the Palestinian issue and the situation in the Gulf region."
