Ahmad Al-Kandari began his musical journey at a young age in kindergarten. He recalls, "I was about three or four years old and I played the melodica in my school music group." More than four decades later, this childhood curiosity has blossomed into a distinguished musical career.
Educational and Professional Path
Ahmad Al-Kandari currently works as an assistant professor in the Music Education Department of the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET). Despite his achievements and academic titles, Al-Kandari describes his relationship with music simply: "Music is life." He says, "It is part of everything I do, every feeling I have, and the way I perceive the world." This connection started at home. He credits his family for nurturing his interest in music from a young age.
Specialization in Viola and Notable Works
Over the years, Ahmad Al-Kandari has learned nearly ten different instruments and continues to play several of them. He recalls a story of learning the violin in 15 minutes, explaining, "I learned the basics in about 15 minutes. This was just my initial experience with the instrument as an amateur, not professional mastery."
His choice to specialize in the viola, a lesser-known instrument in Kuwait, was a pivotal decision in his career. He states, "At that time, advanced viola education in Kuwait was limited, so I decided to develop myself professionally in this field." This decision introduced him as the first professional violinist of Kuwait and helped to increase the recognition of this instrument.
Between 2005 and 2015, Al-Kandari composed music for various events for the Ministry of Information, films, and theatrical productions. His works have been performed by prominent Arab artists, and he himself has performed in Kuwait, the Gulf, the Middle East, and the United States.
The Future of Kuwaiti Music and the Importance of Education
Ahmad Al-Kandari believes that the identity of Kuwaiti music has great potential for further development. He hopes to expand musical possibilities by adding more advanced harmonies and richer orchestral arrangements while maintaining the distinct character of Kuwaiti music.
He also emphasizes the importance of music education, stating that it should be considered part of the overall development of students in schools. Al-Kandari expresses, "Music education fosters creativity, focus, emotional expression, and teamwork."
For Al-Kandari, the significance of music goes beyond the stage or classroom. He points to the potential of music to enhance emotional well-being and its use in therapeutic settings: "Music and music therapy can help reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, and improve quality of life."
After a lifetime of performing, composing, and teaching, Al-Kandari measures success not only through awards or professional recognition but through the knowledge he shares and the people he helps. He says, "I hope people remember me as someone who shared his knowledge, supported others, and prepared the next generation."
