Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, officially submitted his resignation from the presidency to the parliament of the country on Sunday. Vučić stated: "I am now signing the text which is as follows: 'In accordance with Article 116 and Paragraph 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, I hereby submit my resignation from the position of President of the Republic.' This text will be sent to the parliament, and tomorrow you will go for the handover."

Legal Process of Resignation

According to the constitution and laws regarding the President of Serbia, the presidential term ends when a written resignation is officially submitted to the National Assembly, without the need for approval. Ana Brnabić, the Speaker of the National Assembly, will assume presidential duties for a maximum of three months and must call for presidential elections during this period.

Vučić also announced that he will participate as an ordinary citizen in the early parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25. The Serbian parliament was dissolved on September 9, and according to the constitution, the dissolved parliament has limited powers, while the government continues to perform its duties until a new government is formed.

Vučić's Elections and Political Future

On September 5, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) nominated Vučić as the head of the electoral list and its candidate for the position of Prime Minister in the early parliamentary elections. After the elections on October 25, the process of forming a new government will begin. The interim president will propose a candidate for Prime Minister to the National Assembly after consulting with representatives of the elected electoral lists. This candidate will then present the government program and cabinet members, which must be approved by a majority of the assembly members.

Vučić, born in Belgrade in 1970, has previously served as Minister of Defense, Deputy Prime Minister, and Prime Minister. He was elected President in 2017 and re-elected in 2022. According to the constitution, the presidential term is five years, and an individual can serve a maximum of two terms.
