Israel's airstrike on the Islamic University in Gaza on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three individuals. According to university staff and local hospital sources, this attack also injured eight others.

Details of the Attack and Reactions

Al-Shifa Hospital reported receiving three bodies and treating eight of the injured. Sources at the university stated that the victims were university staff and the injured were students. The university also announced that on Sunday, the campus and surrounding areas were targeted twice, and in a statement condemned these attacks while mourning the victims.

Position of the Gaza Ministry of Education

The Gaza Ministry of Education also condemned the attack, stating: "Global silence regarding attacks on students and universities fuels the continuation of these crimes." The ministry added: "This attack occurs at a time when the higher education sector is facing complete destruction, with 95 percent of buildings related to academic institutions damaged due to the war."

The Ministry of Education also noted that in the past six days, 10 students and teachers have been killed by the fire of occupying forces.

Israeli Army's Explanation

The Israeli army stated in a statement that the target of this attack was a terrorist from Hamas's military branch. The force added that after identifying non-participating individuals in the area, munitions were diverted to minimize harm to them. This incident is still under investigation, but it has not clarified whether the victims at the university were targeted accidentally.

Despite a ceasefire in Gaza lasting over a year, this ceasefire has not fully prevented violence in the region. Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense, announced that on Sunday, five more individuals were killed, including three in attacks around Khan Younis, one in the center of Deir al-Balah, and one in northwestern Gaza. Additionally, another person was injured due to Israeli gunfire in the Jabalia refugee camp in the north.
