Britain announced that its nearly 200-year-old consulate in Jerusalem will continue its operations despite Israel's request for its closure and will be renamed 'British Representation'. This name change and continuation of activities come in response to recent tensions between Britain and Israel regarding sanctions against settlements.

History and Reasons for Tensions

On September 8, Israel requested that Britain close the consulate located in East Jerusalem within 30 days and withdraw its diplomats from the city. This request stemmed from Britain's decision to impose sanctions on goods produced in Israeli settlements. As the deadline passed, the two countries reached an agreement under which the consulate will continue its operations.

The British consulate in East Jerusalem, established in 1839, is responsible for the diplomatic responsibilities of this country in relation to Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip, providing consular services to Palestinians. This consulate was established when the region was under Ottoman Empire control and operated before the establishment of Israel in 1948.

Status of Jerusalem and Diplomatic Challenges

Jerusalem, as a region with a complex and disputed status, has always been a subject of significant political and diplomatic issues. The city was under British control during the Mandate for Palestine, which ended after the establishment of Israel in 1948. According to a resolution from the United Nations, Jerusalem should be placed under international governance due to its special status in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

However, the occurrence of the Arab-Israeli war in 1948 led to the division of Jerusalem into western and eastern parts. In the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel took control of East Jerusalem and annexed it in 1980. Israel considers the whole of Jerusalem as its capital, but most countries do not recognize this claim and consider East Jerusalem as occupied by Israel. Palestinians also seek to designate East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

A limited number of countries, including Turkey and several Western countries such as France, Belgium, and Italy, have similar consular arrangements to Britain in Jerusalem. The United States also moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018, merging it with its consulate in the city.

The history of the British consulate in Jerusalem and recent diplomatic tensions highlight the challenges in international relations and the complex status of Jerusalem, which remains a central issue in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
