California has recently experienced a prolonged heat wave that has broken temperature records in several locations, and the hot, dry conditions have heightened the risk of wildfires and health problems in the state.
Temperature Records
An initial report from the National Weather Service in San Diego stated that on October 3, eight daily temperature records were broken and one record was tied. For example, the temperature in Santa Ana in Orange County reached 41.7 degrees Celsius, which is about 2.8 degrees higher than the previous record set in 2014. Additionally, in San Diego County, the temperature in Vista reached 42.2 degrees.

San Diego International Airport also recorded a temperature of 40.6 degrees, breaking a record that had stood since 1987. In Northern California, Napa Airport reached a temperature of 35.6 degrees, breaking its previous record.
Wildfire Risks and Air Quality
More than 34 million residents of California are under heat warnings and advisories. Extreme heat warnings are in effect until Thursday evening in some southern California areas, including San Diego and the beaches and valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) reported several active incidents on Sunday, including the "Bucket" fire in Los Angeles County, which has burned 1,048 acres and is 40% contained. Also, the "Dome" fire in Mariposa County has affected 6,826 acres and is also 40% contained.
In total, CAL FIRE has reported over 5,701 wildfires and 328,950 acres burned in 2026. These figures are preliminary and may be subject to frequent updates.
The smoke from active wildfires has also raised health concerns. Fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 can penetrate deep into the lungs and is particularly harmful to children, the elderly, and individuals with heart or lung diseases.
Health officials recommend that residents limit outdoor activities during extreme heat or poor air quality and keep windows and doors closed when smoke is present.
