The Environment Organization in the South Al-Batinah Governorate of Oman, along with the Oman Diving Team and the Baraka Municipality, organized a campaign to remove fishing nets in the marine area of Jabal Al-Sawadi in the Wilayat of Baraka. This campaign was initiated after receiving a report from a citizen about sea turtles trapped in fishing nets and in a state of death.
Immediate Actions and Necessary Coordination
After receiving the report, direct coordination was carried out with the relevant authorities, and the necessary preparations for the immediate implementation of the campaign were made. About 26 people participated in this operation, including 13 divers, who succeeded in removing all the nets and ropes from the site. Environmental Damage and the Necessity of Awareness
Hamoud Khamis Al-Nuaimi, head of the Dimaniyat Islands Protection Center, explained that the center received a report from a citizen about the presence of trapped fishing nets in the marine area of Jabal Al-Sawadi. The report also mentioned the presence of several dead turtles. Following this, immediate coordination was made with the participating authorities to quickly remove and dispose of the nets.
He added that the diving and inspection operations confirmed the presence of several dead turtles trapped in the nets, as well as the loss of several fish and other marine creatures. This indicates the damage that abandoned or lost fishing nets can cause to the marine environment and its inhabitants.
The Environment Organization urges fishermen and sea users to refrain from abandoning or neglecting nets and fishing equipment in their marine environment and to recover and dispose of them through appropriate methods. Additionally, if any lost or trapped nets are observed, they should be reported immediately, as this poses a direct threat to turtles, fish, and marine life and is essential for the protection of the marine environment and the preservation of its biodiversity.
