The Role of Treasury Bills in Oman's Economy
Treasury bills are issued by the Ministry of Finance of Oman as short-term, high-security financial instruments, allowing authorized commercial banks to utilize their surplus funds. The Central Bank of Oman acts as the manager of the issuance of these bills, providing additional benefits such as immediate liquidity through discount and repurchase (Repo) facilities.
The interest rate on Repo operations with the Central Bank of Oman is 4.25%, and the discount rate for the treasury bill discount facility is 4.75%. These rates help investors take advantage of investment opportunities under various economic conditions.
Moreover, treasury bills contribute to promoting the local money market and create a benchmark yield curve for short-term interest rates. Additionally, the government can utilize this tool whenever it needs to finance its current expenditures.
