India is moving towards achieving a significant milestone in high-speed rail technology with the development of its first indigenous train for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor (MAHSR). This train is produced at the facilities of Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and brings together a combination of indigenous engineering capabilities and advanced technologies, ensuring passenger comfort and world-class safety features.
Design and Technical Specifications of the Train
According to the Ministry of Railways of India, this train is specifically designed for the country's conditions, prioritizing passenger comfort, accessibility, and operational efficiency. This project is considered an important step towards strengthening India's domestic manufacturing capabilities in the high-speed rail sector.

The indigenous train is designed to achieve a maximum test speed of 280 kilometers per hour, while its planned operational speed will be 249 kilometers per hour. The approximate length of this train is 202 meters and includes eight coaches, comprising four motorized coaches and four trailer coaches, with an estimated capacity of 557 passengers, including two special spaces for persons with disabilities and those with reduced mobility.
Comfort and Accessibility for Passengers
Passenger comfort has been considered a key principle in the interior design of the train. The coaches feature ergonomically designed seats tailored to the needs of Indian passengers, along with amenities such as LED interior lighting, overhead luggage racks, additional luggage stations, and power outlets for laptops and mobile devices.
The train also includes modern bio-digester toilets that help minimize wastewater production, and wide windows in each row of seating provide better views for passengers. A comprehensive passenger information system will also keep travelers informed throughout their journey and facilitate direct communication with train crew members in emergencies.
Special attention has been given to reducing noise and vibration during travel. This train is designed with sound insulation in its body and floor structure, soundproofing covers, and aerodynamic profiles to prevent noise generation and enhance the travel experience.
