The first day of the SEMICON India 2026 exhibition in New Delhi began with the introduction of a comprehensive plan for a new phase of India's semiconductor program. This program includes investment commitments worth approximately 1 lakh crore rupees and plans to create nearly one lakh jobs.

Collaboration between Nexperia and Tata in Semiconductor Wafer Production

Tata Electronics has signed agreements to cover several sectors of the semiconductor ecosystem. The company has collaborated with Nexperia for semiconductor wafer production, assembly, and testing, and has signed an agreement for innovation and technology collaboration. Under this agreement, Nexperia and Tata are set to produce a wide range of Nexperia's power control chips at a factory worth $11 billion that Tata is building in Dholera.

The two companies will also collaborate on testing and assembling chips at Tata's packaging facilities in Jagirwad.

Development of the Semiconductor Ecosystem in India

Tata Electronics has also signed an agreement with Ascendas First Space to develop a supplier park covering 363 hectares in Dholera, Gujarat, aimed at supporting suppliers around semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Separate agreements with Fujifilm and JSR Corporation emphasize the focus on localization and sourcing critical semiconductor materials and advanced chemicals. Additionally, an agreement has been made with BESI Singapore to establish advanced packaging capabilities in India.

Tata Electronics has also signed an agreement with the Semiconductor Laboratory for semiconductor design services, process technology, supply chain localization, and workforce development.

Alongside these agreements, Kaynes Semicon has also signed agreements with OptoML India, GridCrest Technologies, and Sensesemi to explore advanced packaging and system solutions on modules.

The India Semiconductor Mission and Intel India have also launched a program titled "Introduction to Semiconductors," while Intel India and the Institute of New Age Makers have signed an agreement to develop the workforce in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies.

Six ChipIN regional centers have also been announced to expand access to chip design capabilities across the country.

Amidst production-related developments, Suchi Semicon and eInfochips exchanged their first batch of commercial devices, and commercial semiconductor production by CDIL was announced, along with collaboration with the Japanese company Shindengen for packaging development.

The Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, outlined the executive approach for Semicon 2.0, which seeks to expand the initial focus on establishing semiconductor manufacturing facilities and developing a broader ecosystem around it.

According to the information provided, Semicon 2.0 aims to "create a broader ecosystem" and enhance capabilities in the semiconductor value chain. Investment commitments worth approximately 1 lakh crore rupees, equivalent to about $11 to $12 billion, have been received in the Semicon 2.0 ecosystem. These investments are expected to materialize over the next two to three years.

The government will also pay special attention to creating new jobs in the semiconductor sector, aiming to create nearly one lakh new job opportunities.

The new phase of the government will be built around six main areas - semiconductor design, machines and materials, manufacturing facilities, advanced packaging, applied research and development, and workforce development.
