Eritrea has severed all diplomatic relations with Ethiopia. This action came after Ethiopia issued an order to close its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats as persona non grata. These developments have raised concerns regarding the escalation of conflicts in northern Ethiopia.
Reasons for Cutting Diplomatic Relations
The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that this decision was made in response to "hostile and aggressive actions" by Eritrea. The ministry also announced that Eritrean diplomats must leave Ethiopia within 48 hours. Following this action, Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebreab stated that Eritrea has no option but to cut diplomatic relations with Ethiopia and described this action as a reciprocal measure.

Regional and International Impacts
These developments occur as the African Union Commission has urged the countries of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to refrain from any actions or statements that could escalate tensions. Recent conflicts in Ethiopia represent the largest escalation of violence since the end of the civil war from 2020 to 2022, in which hundreds of thousands lost their lives.
In this context, Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt of supporting the opposition coalition led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). These accusations have been denied by the three countries. Additionally, Ethiopia has declared an Egyptian diplomat as persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country within 48 hours. In response, Egypt has also declared an Ethiopian embassy advisor in Cairo as persona non grata.
Under these circumstances, concerns about the potential for the conflict to escalate into a regional crisis have increased. Recent explosions in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, have not only heightened tensions but also raised further questions about the security situation in the country.
