Excavations at an archaeological site in Ibri, in the Al Dhahirah Governorate of Oman, have led to the discovery of human remains, complete pottery vessels, and metal artifacts dating back to the third millennium BC.

Details of the Discoveries

These excavations, which began earlier last week, showcased burial chambers containing human remains and pottery vessels. Most of these items are related to the Jamdat Nasr civilization in Mesopotamia. Walid bin Hamad Al Ghafri, director of the Heritage and Tourism Department of Al Dhahirah Governorate, announced that this work is being conducted as a salvage excavation to document and protect the ancient tombs located within a residential project in Ibri.

Purpose of the Discoveries

The purpose of these excavations is to protect archaeological evidence and recover artifacts that may be lost due to rapid urban development in the area. These findings include copper and bronze tools, such as spearheads, axes, and daggers, along with a large collection of beads that date to the same period.

A team of specialists will continue their work at this site, and these excavations are expected to continue until the end of this month. Initial findings indicate that this site holds significant archaeological importance and may provide new insights into historical connections and cultural exchanges between Oman and neighboring civilizations in the third millennium BC.

These discoveries will contribute to a better understanding of ancient Oman's history and the development of its cultural ties with the broader region. Additionally, these findings will assist researchers and historians in gaining a deeper understanding of the lives and culture of the people in this region during ancient times.
