The opera 'Mothers of Kherson', written by George Burnett, is an artistic exhibition of the dangerous journeys of Ukrainian mothers who cross various borders to bring their children back from Russian-occupied territories. This opera, produced by the Polish National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, will be staged this week in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and will also be performed in the United States next spring.

A Human Story in the Heart of War

The story of this opera revolves around mothers who are trying to retrieve their children from Russian-controlled lands. Media reports have indicated that thousands of Ukrainian children have been forcibly transferred to Russia and occupied areas and are undergoing 're-education' programs. This opera is being staged at a critical time for Ukraine, as Western support for Kyiv is gradually becoming more fragile.

George Burnett, at a press conference prior to the opera's performance at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, referred to the human emotions of the story and said, 'This is a very human story that I hope will resonate with people.' He noted that the opera examines the challenges faced by mothers searching for their children from the city of Kherson as they travel into enemy territory.

Music and Drama to Capture Global Attention

Maxim Klemits, the composer of this opera, stated that while not every detail of the story is narrated with precision, efforts have been made to preserve the truth of the matter as much as possible. He said, 'This is a story about people and love,' adding that the feeling of bringing this performance to life has been the best feeling possible for him as a composer and a Ukrainian.

The opera's director, Kri-Lynn Wilson, who established the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra after the Russian invasion, announced the rapid production of this opera due to the urgent need to showcase it on global stages. She emphasized that 'neither words nor sanctions' can resolve this war, and her mission is to draw the Western community's attention to Ukraine. She added, 'Beautiful music and drama convey this issue more powerfully than a news cycle.'
