Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, at the UN General Assembly meeting on September 22, expressed concern over the organization's inability to maintain peace and called for reforms in the Security Council.

Critique of the Current Structure of the Security Council

Erdogan noted in his speech that the UN, established 81 years ago to maintain peace and security, is now unable to fulfill this duty. He said: "Let us acknowledge that a system that limits the will of over 190 countries to the demands of five countries is neither fair nor capable of establishing complete trust." Erdogan's remarks reflect his long-standing criticisms of the Security Council's structure and the need for a more comprehensive and inclusive system.

Humanitarian Catastrophe in Gaza and Support for Palestine

Furthermore, Erdogan strongly condemned the humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating: "No one who has humanity, compassion, and mercy in their heart can remain indifferent to what is happening there." He also referred to the absence of Mahmoud Abbas, the President of Palestine, at the UN General Assembly for two consecutive years, saying: "This injustice towards our Palestinian brothers and sisters wounds our consciences."

Erdogan urged countries that have not recognized the Palestinian state to reconsider their positions and called on all countries to increase pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza. He described this war as "the worst and most inhumane concentration camp of our time." Turkey, as a NATO member, is considered a serious critic of Israel and its attacks on Gaza, repeatedly calling for international actions against Israel.

Israel's attacks on Gaza, which Turkey labels as genocide, have always faced strong reactions from Ankara. While Israel has denied these accusations, Erdogan emphasizes the need for a more decisive international approach, stating: "The UN must fulfill its duties regarding the establishment of peace and security in the world."
