Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raeisi, two Iranian men, were executed on charges related to the widespread protests that occurred in December of this year in the country. This action comes as the Iranian judiciary has announced that the death sentences for these two individuals have been confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Details of the Case and Charges

According to news sources, these two individuals are among the defendants in a case known as the "Ali Khani Square" case in the city of Isfahan. In this case, officials have claimed that four security personnel were killed during the protests on December 8. Previously, five others had also been executed on similar charges, and seven more are facing the same sentence.

The execution of the aforementioned two men raises the number of individuals executed during the December protests to 34. This statistic has been compiled by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization and reflects the intensification of the Iranian government's repressive actions against protesters.

Status of Other Convicts

Alongside these two men, three women are also facing death sentences in sensitive political cases. Mozhdeh Hashemi Bazargani, whose sentence has been confirmed by the Supreme Court, has claimed that she was tortured and deprived of her right to a chosen lawyer. Additionally, Souda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi has been sentenced to death on charges including national security crimes and activities related to sending images to Persian-language media abroad. Mahtab Shabani has also been sentenced to death for assisting injured protesters and transporting them by motorcycle.

These executions and widespread crackdowns have raised serious concerns about the human rights situation in Iran. Given the current political and social conditions, the increase in executions is perceived as a tool to intimidate protesters and suppress any social discontent. This issue has gained more significance following the nationwide protests that began after the death of a young woman named Mahsa Amini in September 2022.

Ultimately, the recent executions in Iran not only impact the human rights situation but may also have serious repercussions for the country's international relations. International observers and human rights organizations have strongly condemned these actions and called for an immediate halt to executions and respect for human rights in Iran.
