The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced in a new report that the global economy is expected to achieve real GDP growth of over 3 percent this year. This forecast comes as strong investment in artificial intelligence has managed to offset the energy shock caused by the war in the Middle East. However, significant downside risks are also emerging, and some countries are more vulnerable due to rising debt burdens.

Analysis of the Current State of the Global Economy

Despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East keeping oil prices above $100 per barrel, the International Monetary Fund has projected that global growth will reach 3.1 percent in 2026. This figure represents a slight increase from previous forecasts made in July. The World Economic Outlook report was released on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok.

The International Monetary Fund also forecasts that global growth will reach 3.4 percent in 2027, consistent with previous forecasts made in July. According to Silvana Tenreyro, the IMF's chief economist, "The global economy has been resilient, but this resilience is nearing its limits and needs rebuilding."

Risks and Challenges Ahead

Major risks affecting economic growth include prolonged wars in the Middle East, rising interest rates, and severe weather fluctuations due to the El Niño phenomenon. Additionally, the potential decline in the profitability of investments in artificial intelligence could lead to a decrease in asset and investment prices. The International Monetary Fund has also noted the widening gap between countries benefiting from artificial intelligence and those that have fallen behind in this trend.

Currently, only 32 countries account for about 95 percent of global growth, down from 54 countries in April. The International Monetary Fund has also predicted that countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates will face deep recessions, with Saudi Arabia's GDP growth expected to drop to -3.3 percent this year.

Among major economies, the growth forecast for the United States remains at 2.3 percent for 2026 and 2027, while China's growth is expected to reach 4.5 percent in 2026 and 4.0 percent in 2027. India continues to be the fastest-growing major economy in the world, with a growth rate of 7.0 percent in both 2026 and 2027.

Finally, it is expected that increased investment in artificial intelligence will create upward pressure on prices, with global inflation rates projected to be 4.7 percent and 4.1 percent for 2026 and 2027, respectively.
