Indian equity mutual funds attracted ₹383.07 billion ($4 billion) in September, marking the highest inflow in the last five months. This increase in investment comes as domestic investors continue to invest despite severe market sell-offs and foreign capital outflows.
Significant Growth in Domestic Investments
Mutual funds in the mid and small-cap segments attracted inflows of ₹78.45 billion and ₹90.39 billion, respectively. Additionally, systematic investments (SIP) rose by 0.6% to a record ₹324.90 billion ($3.39 billion). These stable domestic investments have helped offset the $3.75 billion outflow from foreign investments in September.

Market Status Analysis and Future Outlook
Venkata Chalasani, CEO of AMFI, stated that steady domestic flows, especially through SIPs, indicate strong support from retail investors and domestic institutions. This ongoing support is notable amid inflationary pressures, rising crude oil prices, and increasing yields on U.S. bonds.
Despite a 6.1% decline in the Nifty 50 index in September and an approximate 14.4% drop in 2026, domestic investments in mutual funds have helped mitigate the negative impact on the market. While the small-cap index has increased by 9.6%, the mid-cap index has only decreased by 2.7%.
Market experts believe that sustained growth in SIP investments represents a structural shift in India's investment landscape. One expert has predicted that continued support from domestic institutions could pave the way for a structural bull market, especially when foreign institutional investors return to the market.
Meanwhile, investors continued to increase their investments in precious metals. Gold ETF inflows rose by 71% in September, reaching ₹44.51 billion, while silver ETFs attracted ₹19.74 billion, indicating ongoing interest in alternative investment options amid market uncertainty.
