Samit Machkar, an Indian pilot, was recognized as a hero on Thursday for his efforts to maintain control of the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight after being attacked by a colleague, sustaining injuries but managing to avert a disaster.
Heroism in Difficult Conditions
Friends and neighbors of Samit in the Mumbai suburbs, where his family lives, did not find his bravery unexpected. They describe him as a warm-hearted, helpful man who always smiles and has maintained his composure under pressure since childhood.
Akshay Doshi, one of the neighbors who has been friends with Machkar for about 15 years, said, "We expected no less from him — this was not unexpected for us." He also noted, "We are proud of him for his nature and bravery. He saved lives in a dangerous situation."
Job Challenges and Strong Spirit
Machkar, who is in his 30s and has over 13 years of flying experience, emphasized the heavy responsibility of passenger safety in his youth. Pratik Gandhi, his longtime friend, referred to his calmness in childhood, saying, "We did all the mischief that kids do, but he was always very calm."
This calmness was tested on Wednesday when Machkar was attacked by a colleague during the flight, leading to a struggle for control of the aircraft. Reports indicate that 166 of the 174 passengers on this flight were Israeli citizens.
Officials have not provided details about the nature of Machkar's injuries but have confirmed that he is receiving hospital treatment. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his actions, stating that he saved many lives and prevented "a major disaster."
Modi wrote in a social media post: "Captain Samit Machkar is a hero. In the face of serious dangers and despite severe injuries, he showed extraordinary courage and will to save others' lives."
President Droupadi Murmu also commended Machkar, saying, "We take pride in his courage and presence of mind, and his actions helped prevent a major disaster."
Machkar is currently recovering in Saudi Arabia, and rumors suggest that his family has traveled to the country to be with him. One of his neighbors, Baush Shah, added that Machkar is always ready to help others and is respected for his good nature.
