The Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran approved Mehrzad Akhlaghi Katbi as the Minister of Defense of the country on Sunday. This appointment is officially a temporary leadership arrangement in the Ministry of Defense that arose after the death of the former minister, Aziz Nasrzadeh, due to missile attacks by the United States and Israel last February.
Akhlaghi's Background and Experience
Mehrzad Akhlaghi Katbi, with decades of experience in Iran's defense industry, has held senior roles in aerospace and missile sectors. He is under sanctions by the United States and the European Union due to his activities in Iran's defense sector. This extensive experience may assist him in effectively managing the Ministry of Defense.
Plans of the New Minister of Defense
In a program presented to the members of parliament, Akhlaghi emphasized his commitment to rebuilding the country's military and industrial infrastructure, accelerating the development of defense technologies, and expanding cooperation with private sector companies. He stated: "If the American enemy makes another miscalculation, the response from the brave people of Iran and the warriors of Islam will be astonishing and widespread."
Akhlaghi also referred to Iran's measures to counter the potential use of the GBU-43/B bomb, known as the "Mother of All Bombs," by the United States. He emphasized that Tehran has taken necessary measures to address this threat.
Implications of Akhlaghi's Appointment
Mehrzad Akhlaghi Katbi's appointment as Minister of Defense could potentially lead to significant changes in Iran's defense policies. As an experienced figure in the defense industry, he may play an effective role in strengthening the country's defense. Additionally, given the current sensitive conditions in the region and external threats, his actions and decisions could have important implications for Iran's national security.
Akhlaghi further stated: "The President of the United States should focus on ensuring the safe withdrawal of his forces from the region. If he drops a bomb, he should see how many of his forces exit the region horizontally." These remarks clearly reflect Iran's serious determination to defend its national sovereignty and confront external threats.
