Israeli airstrikes on Gaza on Sunday claimed the lives of at least eight Palestinians, among whom five were police officers. According to medical reports and the Hamas Interior Ministry, these strikes took place at two different locations in the Gaza Strip.

Details of the Strikes

Reports indicate that three people were killed in an airstrike in Gaza City. The Hamas Interior Ministry confirmed that five police officers lost their lives in another strike in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military stated that the target of these strikes was several militants in Khan Younis, but did not release further information regarding the strike on Gaza City.

Background of the Conflicts

Israel, citing a violation of a year-long ceasefire by the militant group Hamas, has recently intensified its airstrikes against this group. Hamas has denied this claim and accuses Israel of undermining the peace agreement in Gaza. The ceasefire signed last year, mediated by the United States, refers to the reconstruction of Gaza, but little progress has been made in this regard.

More than two million residents of Gaza live under harsh conditions in the ruins of war, most of them residing in temporary tents and damaged buildings. While Israel controls about two-thirds of this territory, residents have been forced by Israel to evacuate these areas.

According to health officials in Gaza, since the beginning of the ceasefire, at least 1,500 Palestinians have lost their lives in Israeli attacks, while Israel has reported that four of its soldiers have been killed in these conflicts. Palestinian officials state that over 74,000 people have died in Israeli attacks on Gaza, which began after Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
