Widespread protests have taken place in France in recent days, leading to violence and severe clashes between police and protesters. In these protests, which saw hundreds of thousands participating, 565 people were arrested across the country for violent behavior. Laurent Nunez, the Minister of the Interior, stated that most demonstrations were generally peaceful, but condemned the violence that occurred.
Violence and Clashes
In Paris, four police officers and one gendarmerie guard were injured in recent incidents, three of whom suffered burns from Molotov cocktails. Nunez described the attack on a police officer with a Molotov cocktail as an "attempted murder" and added that the officer managed to escape with minor injuries.
During the protests, clashes broke out between some protesters and the police. According to the Paris municipality, hundreds of protesters attacked security forces by throwing stones and objects, and the police responded with tear gas and baton strikes. Nunez also described the level of violence from some protesters as "astonishing" and attributed this behavior to extremist leftist groups.
Restrictions and Reactions
On Saturday and Sunday, a curfew from 11 PM to 6 AM was imposed in central Paris areas including République and Châtelet-Les-Halles. The Ministry of the Interior announced that radical elements in cities such as Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Marseille attempted to enter urban centers with the aim of destruction and looting. In Toulouse, police were forced to use water cannons to disperse protesters.
These protests come amid rising political tensions in France, with the presidential election less than six months away. Marine Le Pen, the leader of the right-wing party, called on Twitter for severe punishment for those involved in the Molotov cocktail attacks and described images of the officer on fire as "unacceptable."
The presence of protesters in various costumes, including "Spider-Man" and "Frankenstein," reflects the depth of dissatisfaction in society. This movement, which includes yellow vest activists, labor unions, and students, initially focused on the cost of living and inequalities, and now emphasizes civil rights and the right to protest.
