On Thursday, Israelis felt a strong sense of pride after passengers took control of a plane and prevented an imminent disaster. This event occurred just days before the anniversary of the October 7 attack, the largest security failure in Israel's history.

Exceptional Spirit and Military Training

For many Israelis, this incident on the Fly Dubai flight has reinforced their view of their country's exceptionalism. With a 'we can' spirit and nearly universal military training, they feel capable of defending themselves against all challenges.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented, "I don't know if you will be the next victim, but rest assured that an Israeli is sitting next to you." He took advantage of this national sentiment by appearing at the airport to welcome the passengers.

Appreciation for Flight Heroes

The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, who has a largely ceremonial role, stated that he would award the Presidential Medal for Civil Courage to the five passengers who went to the cockpit to save others. Herzog said, "You put yourselves in danger to save others and prevented a horrific disaster. Today, the entire world witnessed the beautiful and brave face of Israeli society."

One of these five, Yaniv Hayoun, known as a television hero, said he tackled the co-pilot and restrained him. Additionally, Israelis expressed gratitude to the Indian pilot of the flight, Sumit Machchar, who successfully opened the cockpit.

This event speaks to the national sentiment and character of Israel. One Tel Aviv citizen remarked, "Fortunately, we have people who go to the army. If this incident had happened in another country, how would it have ended?"

This incident recalls United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed on September 11, 2001, due to passengers' actions. The Fly Dubai flight also landed successfully in Saudi Arabia due to the presence of additional pilots among the passengers.
