Italy is preparing for a possible naval mission to protect its commercial shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced on Thursday that he and the Chief of Defense Staff of Italy have agreed to mobilize the navy to take any necessary actions to ensure the safe passage of Italian vessels.
Security Concerns and Threats in the Red Sea
Concerns about the security of shipping in the Red Sea have increased this month, especially after Iranian-backed Houthis took control of areas along the Yemeni coast overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This threat endangers Saudi oil exports, which have been rerouted from the Strait of Hormuz.
Crosetto stated in a statement: "I have decided to activate the Italian Navy to do what is necessary to ensure the safe passage of Italian ships." He also noted that delays in responding to maritime threats could have direct consequences on the economy and consumers.
Consequences of Economic and Social Crises
The Italian Defense Minister emphasized that disruptions in major shipping routes could increase transportation costs, delay deliveries, and ultimately raise prices for families and businesses. He added: "Every economic crisis hits the most vulnerable hardest and jeopardizes social cohesion and the stability of the country."
Crosetto also referred to the vulnerability of underwater infrastructure, including data cables and energy links. He stated: "For a large maritime country like Italy, monitoring and protecting the sea, both at the surface and below, means safeguarding its security, prosperity, and future."
He also noted that the Ministry of Defense and the Italian Navy will continue to protect the sea and will intervene decisively whenever necessary to safeguard national interests and the security of Italians.
