The United States has denied a visa for Mahmoud Abbas, the President of Palestine, to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This action has recently been taken based on statements from sources familiar with the matter. This decision has indirectly affected officials of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Reasons for Visa Denial

The U.S. Department of State, in a statement that did not directly mention Mahmoud Abbas, announced that it has denied visas for members of the PLO and PA due to a lack of necessary reforms and activities that, in the opinion of the United States, undermine the prospects for peace. According to this department, these organizations have once again failed to meet their commitments to the United States.

In the continuation of this statement, Washington referred to actions taken to internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and also to seek unilateral recognition of Palestine in international forums. Among these actions, efforts to draw the attention of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) were mentioned. These actions have particularly fueled further tensions while Israel is occupying the West Bank.

International and Regional Impacts

This action by the United States has faced diverse reactions from countries and international organizations. Many countries, including France, have addressed the recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations over the past year. Meanwhile, 142 member states of the United Nations have voted in favor of this recognition. This decision seems to have placed the United States at odds with many countries around the world.

In recent months, violence resulting from Israeli attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank has significantly increased. According to statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, since October 7, 2023, more than 1,109 Palestinians, including military and civilians, have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers. Meanwhile, Israeli military attacks on Gaza have also resulted in the deaths of over 73,700 people, a figure confirmed by the Gaza Ministry of Health.

In this context, the international community is deeply concerned about the situation, but the United States has generally remained silent on this issue, only opposing any annexation of Palestinian territory.
