Jordanian security forces arrested three suspects in connection with an attack that occurred at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, located in Karak province, about 120 kilometers southwest of the capital Amman. The attack took place during a funeral service on Friday, resulting in the deaths of 9 people and injuring 40 others.

Details of the Attack

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunfire lasted for several minutes, creating a terrifying situation for those present at the ceremony. Following the incident, the General Directorate of Public Security in Jordan announced that security forces identified and arrested three suspects in an abandoned house in Karak. The suspects responded to gunfire from security forces, and ultimately, all of them were apprehended after being injured.

Reactions from Jordanian Officials

After the incident, Jordanian officials stated that none of the security forces were harmed in the confrontation, and a number of weapons and ammunition were found in the possession of the suspects. The General Directorate of Public Security emphasized that "terrorism has no place among us" and the suspects faced a just fate.

Jordanian officials also indicated that the attack was carried out by "extremist terrorists," but it remains unclear whether these individuals were affiliated with any known groups inside or outside of Jordan. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jordan's Minister of Interior, Mazen Al-Farawieh, announced that officials are investigating the circumstances that lead young people toward extremism, and anyone involved in this attack will be prosecuted.

King Abdullah, a partner of the United States in the fight against extremist Islamic groups, has ordered security forces to respond to this rare attack on Jordan's Christian minority with an "iron fist." Such violence is very unusual in Jordan, which is recognized as a relatively stable country in the Middle East, although officials have stated that several extremist terrorist plots have been thwarted over the years.
