Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, met with Faisal bin Farhan, the Saudi Foreign Minister, in Washington on Monday. This meeting comes as Saudi Arabia seeks U.S. support for its military campaign against Houthi forces in Yemen.
Military Policies and the Role of the United States
The Trump administration has previously refrained from direct military intervention in Yemen. Meanwhile, Houthi forces, backed by Iran, have launched a large-scale attack this month aimed at seizing the Red Sea coast from Saudi government forces. These Houthi advances give them the capability to disrupt maritime routes in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key point for maritime communication between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

In recent weeks, the Houthis have also attacked Saudi maritime and energy infrastructure, including Aramco facilities in the port of Yanbu. On Saturday, a Saudi military spokesman, General Turki al-Maliki, announced that Saudi air defenses had intercepted two drones and two ballistic missiles launched from Yemen.
Renewed Military Activities and Their Consequences
These renewed clashes have reignited the civil war in Yemen, which began in 2014 with the Houthi takeover of the capital, Sana'a. This war, sparked by political and social disputes in Yemen, has led to a severe humanitarian and economic crisis in the country.
Saudi Arabia, which supports the internationally recognized Yemeni government, continues its military campaign to prevent the expansion of Iranian influence in the region. Therefore, U.S. support for Saudi Arabia in this regard is highly significant and could have substantial impacts on future developments in the Middle East.
In this context, Saudi Arabia is seeking to strengthen military and security cooperation with the United States. This cooperation could include the provision of new weapons and military equipment, intelligence sharing, and military consultations. Additionally, these meetings could also lead to the strengthening of relations between the two countries in other areas.
