The skies of the Sultanate of Oman will witness the maximum brightness of the planet Venus on Tuesday. This astronomical event, known as "Venus at Maximum Brightness," occurs specifically with an intensity of approximately (−4.8), introducing Venus as the brightest planet in the sky and the third celestial body visible from Earth after the Sun and the Moon.
Features of the Planet Venus
Wisal Salim Al-Hinai, head of the Social Communications Committee at the Oman Astronomy and Space Society, stated that Venus, due to its dazzling brightness in the sky, is recognized during this period as a significantly bright point visible to the naked eye. Even in conditions of light pollution, this planet is easily observable. He explained that this brightness is due to Venus's relative proximity to Earth and its high capacity to reflect sunlight.
Observing Venus and Astronomical Tips
Al-Hinai added that the maximum brightness of Venus is not necessarily simultaneous with its greatest angular distance from the Sun in the sky. He noted that this planet reached its greatest eastern elongation in August, meaning that at this stage, Venus has reached its largest angular distance as seen from Earth to the east of the Sun, thus clearly appearing in the night sky after sunset.
He also urged astronomy enthusiasts to observe Venus from locations with an unobstructed western horizon, away from buildings and elevations that may block the view. He emphasized that observation with the naked eye does not require any specific astronomical equipment, while telescopes allow for viewing the crescent phase and details of Venus's appearance.
Venus is observed as the brightest planet in the solar system from Earth and is commonly referred to as the "evening star" when it appears after sunset and the "morning star" when it becomes visible before sunrise. Its brightness is due to sunlight reflecting off its dense atmosphere.
