Meta Technologies will now directly report child safety issues to the Cyber Crime portal managed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). This announcement reflects the company's commitment to addressing online exploitation and crimes related to children.
Meta's Commitment to Protecting Children
According to a Meta spokesperson, protecting children on the company's platforms is a top priority, and Meta is committed to working with the government to ensure accountability for perpetrators of these crimes. He added: "To strengthen joint efforts to combat this harm, Meta will now report child safety issues directly to the Cyber Crime portal."
Strengthening Coordination with Indian Authorities
This action is part of Meta's efforts to enhance coordination with Indian authorities in addressing concerns related to child safety and online crimes. Meta leverages major social platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram and has implemented various measures to identify and prevent harmful content for children on these platforms.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, was established to strengthen the country's response to cyber crimes through coordination among enforcement agencies, capacity development, and technology-based solutions. This development comes as the government continues to improve the accountability of digital platforms and ensure that online intermediaries take adequate measures to prevent the dissemination of harmful content, especially content related to children.
Government sources have stated that ensuring online safety for children is a fundamental requirement for any social media platform operating in India, and this issue is "non-negotiable." Previously, Meta representatives in India visited the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on September 9 in connection with an inquiry regarding advertisements related to child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSEAM).
The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) had also previously directed the Delhi police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into allegations of paid advertisements on Meta's Instagram promoting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). NHRC also ordered an investigation into whether the technology company and other relevant entities have complied with mandatory reporting requirements under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
