On November 4, 2023, the United States imposed new sanctions against companies and individuals based in India and Turkey for supporting the Islamic Republic of Iran. The U.S. Treasury Department announced that these sanctions are part of the previous U.S. administration's "Operation Economic Outcast," aimed at cutting Iran's ability to sell oil and finance its war against the United States and Israel.
Details of the Sanctions and Their Impact
These sanctions were imposed one day after Democrats achieved significant victories in the midterm elections. With rising voter dissatisfaction over the impact of the Iran war on inflation rates in the United States, the Treasury Department stated that recent actions have severely harmed the Iranian economy, leading to a devaluation of the rial and an increase in inflation rates to around 90 percent.

The new sanctions target a large criminal network led by Sunil Kumar Sharma, his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, and two other Indian citizens. These individuals were sanctioned for two businesses of their own and not for any other entities associated with Sharma. The Treasury Department stated that these individuals provided fake flags and certificates to sanctioned vessels carrying Iranian oil.
Legal and Economic Consequences
Fake certificates and flags allow vessels engaged in illegal activities to evade international safety and environmental regulations and continue operating without insurance for damages. This means that these vessels can inflict billions of dollars in damage to the economies of the respective countries.
Additionally, the Turkey-based ground services company "Fogo Grand Services" was sanctioned for its ongoing support of Iran's heavily sanctioned aviation sector. This company provides services to several Iranian airlines that are under U.S. sanctions.
Reports indicate that these sanctions send a strong message to the international community that the United States is seeking to increase economic pressure on Iran. At the same time, President Donald Trump acknowledged the role of the Iran war and rising gasoline prices in the recent election results but emphasized that the conflict is worth it.
The Treasury Department also warned the industry that engaging with suspicious vessels would expose them to the risk of sanctions. This office stated that Sharma and Shahid, residents of Chandigrah, India, have illegally claimed to represent countries such as Guyana, Eswatini, and Laos, and have provided fake flags and certificates.
