Oman and Botswana Emphasized Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and President Duma Gideon Bakwena of the Republic of Botswana met from September 16 to 17, 2026, and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two countries. This visit is considered a milestone in the relations between the Republic of Botswana and the Sultanate of Oman, affirming the bonds of friendship and mutual respect that unite the two countries.

Official Talks and Exchange of Views

During this meeting, the Sultan of Oman and the President of Botswana held official talks in a friendly and cordial atmosphere. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq expressed gratitude to the government and people of Botswana for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended to him and his accompanying delegation.

The Sultan of Oman also congratulated the President of Botswana and the people of the country on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of Botswana's independence and emphasized this country's enduring commitment to democracy and the rule of law, which has provided a stable infrastructure for the stability and socio-economic development of the country.

Development of Bilateral Cooperation

The two leaders emphasized the brotherly relations and close bonds of friendship that unite the Republic of Botswana and the Sultanate of Oman, renewing their commitment to strengthening political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two countries. They concluded that to achieve this goal, the scope of bilateral cooperation should be expanded, considering the relative and competitive advantages of both countries in areas of mutual interest, including food security, agriculture, oil and energy, financial services, mining and mineral processing, health, tourism, transportation and logistics, education and skill development, and trade and investment.

In the field of diplomatic and political cooperation, the two leaders welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Botswana and the Sultanate of Oman on October 14, 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. This relationship was quickly followed by high-level visits from the President of Botswana to Oman in October 2025 and April 2026.

The two leaders also emphasized the importance of holding regular political consultations and exchanging high-level visits to advance the implementation of agreements in the areas of cooperation.

In this meeting, both sides also discussed regional and international developments, including developments in Africa and the Middle East, and other issues of mutual interest, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, mediation, and an international order based on laws.

In this regard, they reaffirmed their commitment to cooperating within the framework of the United Nations and other multilateral forums to support efforts to promote international peace and security and sustainable development.

Finally, the President of Botswana appreciated the Sultan of Oman's tireless efforts in supporting mediation and achieving peaceful solutions to conflicts in the region. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq also welcomed the opportunity to visit the Botswana Diamond Trading Company (DTCB) and became closely acquainted with the country's diamond industry.

The two leaders also signed nine bilateral documents, including agreements on cooperation in various fields such as public cooperation, political consultations, the abolition of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and special passports, air services, promoting investment, and cooperation in pharmaceutical security and energy development.
