Oman emphasized the importance of raising global awareness about the hazards posed by tsunamis and the necessity of proactive preparedness on the occasion of World Tsunami Awareness Day, which has been endorsed by the United Nations. This day is recognized as an opportunity to remind the importance of proper planning to mitigate the negative impacts of these natural phenomena on human lives and assets.

Development of Tsunami Early Warning Systems

The Civil Aviation Authority of Oman (CAA), on behalf of the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center, places great importance on the development of tsunami early warning systems. This organization aims to ensure timely and accurate warnings in the event of any potential threats by enhancing monitoring systems and strengthening regional and international cooperation in the real-time exchange of information and data.

In collaboration with the National Crisis Management Center and other relevant entities, the Civil Aviation Authority of Oman is also working to enhance the preparedness of communities and individuals through regular drills, awareness programs, and training. These efforts contribute to strengthening national capabilities in responding to natural disasters.

Awareness Efforts in Coastal Communities

Commemorating this day reflects the commitment of the Sultanate of Oman to create communities that are aware of the dangers of natural disasters and to promote a culture of prevention and rapid response. Additionally, this event emphasizes the commitment of the Civil Aviation Authority of Oman to continuously develop national capabilities in managing natural disasters and supporting international efforts to achieve sustainable development goals and reduce disaster risks.

As part of national awareness efforts, the Civil Aviation Authority of Oman continues to hold field campaigns across coastal governorates, including Muscat, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Dhofar, and Southeast Oman. These campaigns are designed to raise public awareness about the dangers posed by severe weather events and tsunamis and to provide appropriate guidance on actions to take during such incidents.

These campaigns include holding awareness lectures for students and local communities, as well as conducting evacuation drills in schools in collaboration with relevant authorities. Several coastal areas have witnessed the implementation of evacuation drills involving cooperation from the Civil Aviation Authority, Civil Defense and Ambulance Organization, National Crisis Management Center, Ministry of Information, and Ministry of Education.

These drills help raise awareness among students and teachers about how to respond safely in the event of a tsunami or flooding and promote a culture of rapid and safe response within the community. It is noteworthy that the Sultanate of Oman is among the countries at risk from tropical storms and tsunamis due to its geographical location overlooking the Sea of Oman.

These campaigns reiterate the importance of increasing awareness of natural disaster risks and appropriate ways to respond to them, helping to strengthen community preparedness to minimize human and financial losses. These campaigns initially focus on coastal governorates and will expand to all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman in the future.
